========================== JeffNEWS, January 10, 1995 ========================== Jefferson's College of Graduate Studies `Adopts' Franklin Learning Center Health Program --------------------------------------------------------- Realizing goals evolving for years, Jefferson's College of Graduate Studies (CGS) has formally "adopted" the Franklin Learning Center's Health Science Program. The program adopted by Jefferson is one of three "mini-schools" making up Franklin, a magnet high school for 900 students in grades 9 through 12. The school is located at 15th and Mt. Vernon streets in the city's Fairmount section and has a racially, culturally and ethnically diverse student body. Gaining young people's interest in science has long been a goal of Jussi J. Saukkonen, MD, CGS dean and vice president for science policy, technology development and international affairs, TJU. And for several years, the Graduate College has been seeking ways to enhance diversity in the CGS student body. In fact, the formal relationship now established between CGS and Franklin is a natural outgrowth of efforts directed informally toward these goals over recent years, making the "match" between Jefferson and Franklin a "perfect fit," in the words of two Jefferson faculty members closely involved in the discussions that brought the long-sought goal to fruition. They are Georganne K. Buescher, EdD, associate dean, CGS, and Leonard M. Rosenfeld, PhD, assistant professor of physiology, JMC/CGS. This "perfect fit" between Jefferson's CGS and Franklin is personified by the Dean of Franklin's Health Science Program, Elliott Lewis, PhD. Dr. Lewis had served three years as a member of the CGS Minority Affairs Advisory Council and participated in faculty development research at Jefferson before becoming dean at Franklin. Says Dean Saukkonen, "Dr. Lewis's working relationship with Jefferson over the past several years very well facilitates the formal relationship that now exists between Jefferson and Franklin, hopefully for many years to come." To help develop the health science program at Franklin, Dr. Lewis formed the Health Science Advisory Board, composed of community leaders and professionals from area institutions. Members from CGS include Drs. Buescher and Rosenfeld as well as Lois M. Newman, PhD, associate professor of anatomy and developmental biology, and Carmen F. Merryman, MD, professor of biochemistry/molecular biology. Edward Christian, PhD, assistant dean, student affairs and special programs, JMC, and Jerome Buescher, PhD, CGS Alumni Association president, are also Board members. Franklin's Health Sciences Program offers its 300 students courses preparing them for college and for careers in health and medical fields. Students take a variety of science and health-related courses, and have on-site training opportunities at Jefferson and at other area hospitals and healthcare facilities. The "adoption" agreement calls for Jefferson's CGS to provide several services and activities to Franklin health sciences students. These include laboratory/research experience during the school year for academic credit, laboratory/research experience as well as tutoring and mentoring during the summer, guest lecturers and speakers, and tours of Jefferson research, educational and clinical facilities. Central to the goals of the program is the range of mentoring opportunities made possible by the direct involvement of CGS faculty and students with Franklin students. In addition, CGS and Franklin faculty will co-develop parts of the science curriculum at Franklin. With 3,000 applicants for the 300 available openings at Franklin's three mini-schools each year, diversity as well as academic ability is stressed in the selection process. The Graduate College hopes that this ability and diversity will eventually find their way to Jefferson as these high school students gain exposure early in their school careers to opportunities and training in health care in general and to Jefferson in particular. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
