========================== JeffNEWS, January 10, 1995 ========================== Jefferson Undertakes Collaboration With Spanish Research Council ---------------------------------------------------------------- Jefferson and Spain's Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cienti'ficas (Spanish Council for Scientific Research), that country's preeminent research organization, began an important scientific collaboration with the signing of an Agreement of Cooperation in the office of University president Paul C. Brucker, MD. "We seek to advance the goals and objectives of both institutions through scientific cooperation and exchange," Dr. Brucker said. The council's agreement with Jefferson is the first with any United States institution, although the organization has similar collaborative arrangements with many prominent research institutions worldwide. The council's president, Jose' M. Mato, MD, is an internationally acclaimed scientist who was recently awarded Jefferson's Lennox K. Black International Prize in Medicine. During Dr. Mato's stay at Jefferson this past August under the aegis of the prize, several common interests between the council and Jefferson emerged as promising areas for cooperation: o Organic chemistry at the council; and at Jefferson, pharmacology and rational drug design o Development of new ceramic and other materials at the council; and cardiovascular and orthopaedic surgery at Jefferson o Information science at both institutions - to facilitate scientific exchange ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
