========================== JeffNEWS, January 10, 1995 ========================== Jack Farber Elected Chairman of Jefferson's Board of Trustees ------------------------------------------------------------- Jack Farber, a vice chairman of Jefferson's board of trustees and a board member since September 1984, has been elected the University's eighth board chairman. Mr. Farber has already made significant contributions to Jefferson, having served as vice chairman of the board since June 1989 and as chairman-elect since June 1994. He also served as a member of the Finance Committee, which he chaired from 1985 to 1994. He served on the Capital Projects Task Force from 1984 to 1991 and the Scientific and Academic Affairs Committee from 1985 to 1991. He also chairs the Dean's Council of Overseers of Jefferson's College of Allied Health Sciences, which was formed in 1990, and recently established the Farber Health Professions Scholars Program at the college, as well as the Farber Fellowship awarded annually since 1989 to a student in the Master of Science degree program in rehabilitation nursing. Mr. Farber also created a geriatric fellowship in the department of family medicine. "Mr. Farber brings to the chairmanship vast business experience and a rich involvement and familiarity with Jefferson," said University president, Paul C. Brucker, MD. "Over the past six months, I've had the pleasure of working simultaneously with both James W. Stratton, the former chairman, and Mr. Farber. This ensured a smooth transition when Mr. Stratton stepped down as chairman and Mr. Farber took over on January 1, 1995. "Jefferson is pleased that Mr. Stratton will continue to serve this institution as a member of the board," Dr. Brucker said. "The University appreciates the stability of its board, particularly at this time when healthcare delivery is changing so quickly. "I'm confident that Mr. Farber's continued leadership will facilitate the University's accommodation to the dramatic changes taking place," he said. Said Mr. Stratton, "With Mr. Farber's election as chairman of the board, the financial skills he brought to the chairmanship of the board's finance committee for so many years will be of even greater benefit to Jefferson. It is gratifying that we share the same vision for the University's growth and leadership." Mr. Farber stated, "As a member of the board for the past 10 years, I have a real appreciation of the University and our mission to train health professionals, expand knowledge through research and deliver excellent health care. "This mission will continue, but undoubtedly our approach to accomplish it will have to change because of the radical transformation in the delivery of health care. I look forward to working with the board and the senior administration as we face these new challenges." Mr. Farber is chairman, president and chief executive officer of CSS Industries Inc., a trustee of the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust, a director of the Hunt Manufacturing Company, a director of the American Jewish Committee, a trustee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, and a member of the Philadelphia Presidents' Organization. In addition, he is president of the Farber Foundation and a director of the William and Eva Fox Foundation. Mr. Farber was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor of science degree from the Wharton School. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
