======================= JeffNEWS, July 12, 1994 ======================= CPE Students Minister to the Spirit ----------------------------------- Since a hospital's larger mission is to care for the whole person, the emotional and spiritual needs of patients must be provided for in their care. Professional chaplains and pastoral care workers fill this role, helping hospitalized patients and their families call on their religious faith for comfort, support and guidance in times of illness. Jefferson is once again conducting an 11-week summer Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program, led by Rev. Joseph Leggieri, PhD, director of pastoral care and education at Jefferson Hospital, to help train future religious service workers. Following is a profile of the students you may encounter in the hospital through August 19. After volunteering for her parish and diocese in various capacities, embarking on a career in hospital ministry was the logical next step for Alice Boppell, a Roman Catholic laywoman. She is working on the medical care nursing floors and in the acute dialysis inpatient unit. Beth Hedges, originally from the Delaware Valley, is a seminary student at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago. She has one more quarter to complete before graduating and would like to work with college students. You will find Beth on the cardiopulmonary care floors. Shoshee Larkey is a student at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote. She was formerly a student rabbi at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center and will be entering Sloane Kettering's CPE program later this year. She aspires to work with a hospital's hospice patients. Shoshee is assigned to the emergency department, crisis unit, psychiatry care program, surgical waiting area and same day admission area. John McCloskey, a Capuchin Franciscan Friar, is a seminary student at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Once a state employee who developed policies on criminal justice, John is hoping to be an ordained priest within the Capuchin Order. He is working on the surgical care nursing floors. Reinhard Surendorff, of Germany, is a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. He has studied in Israel, Germany and the United States. Reinhard will participate in Abington Memorial Hospital's CPE program before returning to his homeland where he hopes to become a pastor in a Lutheran church. You will find Reinhard on the neurosensory nursing floors. Former substitute teacher, Scott Trevithick, is a student at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey who enjoys working with children and youth. He looks forward to being ordained in a year and serving as a pastor in a Presbyterian church. Scott's experience and interests are put to good use on the women and children nursing floors.
