======================= JeffNEWS, July 12, 1994 ======================= Polystyrene Foam Recycling Official ----------------------------------- Jefferson has launched the next phase of its ongoing recycling program, announced Richard C. Alberto, assistant executive director for support services and chairman of the hospital's Environmental Resource Utilization Committee. The yellow multicompartment prototype recycling containers, strategically placed throughout the Atrium for several weeks, passed muster. Polystrene foam - foam drinking cups, soup and salad bowls and food plates - has been officially added to Jefferson's recycling program. To ensure that our recycling efforts continue to be successful, Shelley Chamberlain, assistant director for dining services, offers these suggestions: o Pitch in to preserve our Earth. If you eat in the Atrium, please be conscientious and separate your trash into the proper bins. o Only foam cups, bowls and plates are recyclable. Napkins, drinking straws, lids, plastic utensils, food and liquids go into the waste bin destined for the landfill. Mixing paper and other waste items with polystyrene contaminates the entire batch of foam products. o Scrape your plates and empty cups before disposing. Just as you rinse food waste from your dishes at home before loading them into the dishwasher, you must also scrape leftover food and drink from your foam plate, bowl and cup before placing them into the polystyrene recycling bin. Leftover food and liquid should be tossed into the waste bin. o Toss cans and glass bottles for recycling into the properly marked shoots. o To help keep the recycling area looking neat, please stack your trays so they nest one on top of the other. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
