=========================== JeffNEWS, December 13, 1994 =========================== THE JEFFERSON 2000 FUND First Phase of Orthopaedic Research Campaign Passes Halfway Mark ---------------------------------------------------------------- Several major gifts to strengthen orthopaedic research and education at Jefferson Medical College (JMC) have pushed the orthopaedic department's campaign significantly forward. The campaign committee, headed by Mr. and Mrs. Edmund N. Carpenter II, set a Phase I goal of $7.4 million. The current total of $4.4 million in gifts and pledges puts it more than halfway there. The major gifts are a $2-million challenge grant from the Annenberg Foundation, headed by former United States ambassador and philanthropist, Walter Annenberg; a $1.25-million gift from Biomet, an Indiana-based orthopaedic products manufacturer; a $500,000 pledge from The Good Samaritan Foundation, and $200,000 pledged by The William Stamps Farish Fund. Jefferson has to raise an additional $5.4 million to meet the Annenberg challenge. So far, $2.4 million of that amount has been pledged. The recent campaign gifts will do a great deal to help realize the department's goals: endow professorships, renovate and equip laboratory space and build a growing endowment to meet future needs. Jefferson's department of orthopaedic surgery is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in patient care, education and research. Founded in 1904 and thus one of the oldest orthopaedic surgery departments in the nation, it was the first to offer an orthopaedic surgical residency program. Jefferson now has 95 orthopaedic surgeons, led by Richard H. Rothman, MD, PhD, the James Edwards Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, department chairman and director of the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at JMC. Dr. Rothman developed the hip prosthesis used in the approximately 700 hip replacements he and his surgical team perform annually. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
