=========================== JeffNEWS, December 13, 1994 =========================== Neurosurgical Department Expands -------------------------------- The appointment of Frederick A. Simeone, MD, as professor and chairman of the department of neurosurgery at Jefferson, has been announced by Joseph S. Gonnella, MD, senior vice president for academic affairs and dean, Jefferson Medical College, and Thomas J. Lewis, senior vice president for healthcare administration and chief executive officer, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Simeone is also chief of the section of neurosurgery at Pennsylvania Hospital. According to Dr. Simeone, several developments in the field have spurred departmental changes. "First, there's been an explosion of technological advances over the past few years," he said." Our association with Pennsylvania Hospital and Wills Eye Hospital through the Neurosensory Institute allows us to pool our resources to purchase specialized equipment and avoid duplication of services in the region." "Second, neurosurgical subspecialties have mushroomed as neurosurgery has become more complex. We've pulled together the top subspecialists in the field, allowing us to offer every possible neurosurgical procedure under one umbrella. Finally, combining our efforts with those of our associate institutions pools a larger source of patients from which we can draw clinical studies to enhance our research effort. It will allow us to expand the range of services we offer to the community as well," said Dr. Simeone. Jefferson has joined forces with Pennsylvania Hospital and Wills Eye Hospital to form the Neurosensory Institute, directed by Dr. Simeone. The institute brings together a single team of physicians dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the neurosensory system. Neurosurgeons involved include David W. Andrews, MD, Giancarlo Barolat, MD, William A. Buchheit, MD, Stephen J. Dante, MD, H. Warren Goldman, MD, PhD, Bruce E. Northrup, MD, Jewell L. Osterholm, MD, and Robert H. Rosenwasser, MD.
