=========================== JeffNEWS, December 13, 1994 =========================== PHLASH Now Up and Running in City --------------------------------- For shoppers, tourists and those who just need to get around Center City, PHLASH is a new way to go. PHLASH is an innovative City transit service featuring a fleet of purple buses with aqua "wings" for a logo, frequently traveling a defined downtown route or "loop," explains Thomas D'Alessandro, manager, commuter services office (CSO). From 18th and Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the west, and Columbus Blvd. (formerly Delaware Ave.) and Penn's Landing to the east, PHLASH links visitors, tourists and residents with major tourist, shopping, entertainment, hotel and transportation sites. The loop goes as far south as Bainbridge St. between 3rd and 4th streets, and as far north as Spring Garden St. between Columbus Blvd. and 2nd St. Buses run about 15 minutes apart, and the entire loop takes about 50 minutes to travel. In addition to providing safety and convenience to riders, PHLASH helps to reduce Center City congestion and meet the stricter standards of the Federal Clean Air Act, as PHLASH buses are using compressed natural gas as fuel. Unlike regular buses, you can get off and on at any PHLASH stop ("PHLASH points") and know you'll always be brought back to your starting point. Locations of day and night "PHLASH point" stops are available at CSO. PHLASH is a special City program. Although it is not a part of SEPTA, it is operated by SEPTA, under contract to the City. SEPTA tokens, transpasses, trailpasses or transfers are not accepted on PHLASH buses. Fares are collected on the buses, and are $1.50 for a one-way ride, $3 for a one-day pass and $1 for a Wednesday ride. Children under six ride free. A special holiday schedule is in effect until January 8, 1995. Buses run day and night seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. On Friday and Saturday, service is extended two hours, running from 9 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. For more information, call CSO at 6417 or PHLASH at 215-4PHLASH (474-5274). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
