GET `ERGONOMICALLY' SMART - FROM `ERGOSMART' ----------------------------------------------------------- If you use an IBM PC on your job, you can now benefit from learning how to best position yourself and your computer in terms of body posture, distance from the keyboard and screen, wrist and arm positions, and other "ergonomically" sound tips and guidelines. The information is demonstrated by photographs and text in "ErgoSmart," a computer program obtained by the environmental health and safety department specifically for use by Jefferson employees. You can also test yourself by the program's interactive features. You can obtain free copies of "ErgoSmart" from the DIS and physical resources file servers or bring a blank disk to Computer Prescriptions. CHOIR REHEARSALS BEGIN ---------------------- The 25th Anniversary Season of the Thomas Jefferson University Choir starts off with rehearsals on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in McClellan Hall. The choir is open to all members of the Jefferson community without audition. Refreshments will be served following the first rehearsal. FIRST ALL-UNIVERSITY CELEBRATION FOR FIVE-YEAR EMPLOYEES -------------------------------------------------------- This year, for the first time, five-year employees from all Jefferson divisions will be honored at a single, gala reception on Tuesday, October 11, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the east atrium of the Gibbon Building. As a result of "Teaming Up to Make a Difference," Jefferson's employee suggestion program, the University will invite 485 honorees from the hospital, University Services, Jefferson Medical College, the College of Allied Health Sciences and the College of Graduate Studies to salute them for their loyalty and dedication. "This is a great opportunity for people who serve this large institution in such varied ways to get to know the many colleagues who share their commitment to Jefferson," said Dan B. Williams, assistant director, human resources. ADDITIONAL PERSONAL DAY FOR MOST JEFFERSONIANS ---------------------------------------------- Beginning April 1, 1995, nonbargaining employees and members of Local 830 will have an added personal day, for a total of five each year. This new personal day replaces the Good Friday holiday (except for members of Local 1199C). For nonbargaining employees and Local 830 members, one personal day will be allocated for each of the following periods: o July 1 - September 30 o October 1 - November 30 o December 1 - January 31 o February 1 - March 31 o April 1 - June 30 Be sure to use and enjoy all of your personal days each year because unused days may not be carried over into a new fiscal year. Remaining University holidays in calendar year 1994 are: Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 24 Christmas: celebrated Monday, December 26 The University will celebrate New Year's Day on Monday, January 2, 1995 SCOTT MEMORIAL LIBRARY PRESENTS SYMPOSIA SERIES ----------------------------------------------- In celebration of the library's centennial year, Academic Information Services and Research will present a series of symposia on important issues in scientific communication. Different topics will be presented each month through December. Contact Elizabeth Warner at 6391 for registration information. o September: "Elements of Effective Presentation." Participants will learn how using computer technology and basic design elements can produce better lectures and scientific presentations. o October: "The New Copyright Laws and Scientific Communications." Participants will learn about trends in copyright law and how they affect written and oral presentations. o November: "Improving the Management of Scientific Information." Participants will learn how personal bibliographic management software can help organize scientific articles into an easily accessible database and facilitate the creation of bibliographies and references into scientific papers. o December: "The History and Future of the Book in Health Care." As books are converted to an electronic format, the delivery of scientific communication is altered. Participants will learn what this technological change means to them. DERMATOLOGY, JCI HOST INTERNATIONAL EVENT ----------------------------------------- The department of dermatology and the Jefferson Cancer Institute (JCI) hosted an informal social for the spouses and children of international postdoctoral fellows. Well over 30 fellows, spouses and children attended the festive getogether hosted by Elaine Tan, PhD, associate professor of pathology and cell biology, and Eileen O'Shaughnessy. Janice Bogen-Field, director of the Office of International Exchange Services discussed the University's resources which are available to Jefferson's international fellows and their families. Tim Bullock, a graduate student in JCI, spoke about upcoming cultural and social activities being developed by Colour of Jefferson, a University- based international organization open to all American and foreign students as well as employees who are interested in cultural exchange and interactions. FREE ORAL CANCER SCREENING OFFERED ---------------------------------- Some changes on your body are easy to spot, such as a sunburn or a bruise. But the signs or oral cancer are often hidden and go unnoticed during the disease's early stages, when it's most treatable. Oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Anthony Farole, DMD, is offering a free community health screening for oral cancer on Wednesday, September 21, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Park Plaza Condominium Medical Offices, Suite A, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's Ford Road Campus, 3900 Ford Road, Philadelphia. SCOTT LIBRARY CHANGES COPY CARD SYSTEM -------------------------------------- Scott Library and the Office of Academic Computing will replace their copy card system during September. As a result, library users will be required to exchange their current copy card for a new one. For a limited period, copy card holders will be able to exchange their cards free ofcharge.
