============================ JeffNEWS, September 13, 1994 ============================ =================== You and Your Health =================== 8th Annual AIDS Pledge Walk Set for October 16 ---------------------------------------------- On Sunday, October 16, more than 18,000 people are expected to converge at Eakins Oval near the Art Museum for the eighth annual Philadelphia AIDS walk. The goal is to raise $850,000 for AIDS care, education and prevention, to benefit residents of the Delaware Valley. This year, for the first time, Thomas Jefferson University has been designated as a beneficiary of a portion of proceeds from the walk. These funds will enable Jefferson to expand our HIV case management program in the department of social work. On September 21, "Button Day," a mass media campaign aimed to educate people about AIDS and the purpose of the AIDS walk, will be observed across the nine-county area. At Jefferson, volunteers will staff booths in the Atrium and at Jefferson Alumni Hall with brochures, fact sheets, buttons and pledge sheets for the October 16 walk. Walk teeshirts will be available in the giftshop and bookstore at $10. Many Jeffersonians have already signed up to walk with departmental teams. If you have not yet signed up, do so on "Button Day" or contact Laurie Barron at 2080. Because there is no cure for metastatic prostate cancer, this new diagnostic test may save many men the trauma of surgery to remove the prostate says Jose G. Moreno, MD, chief resident in urology. The new test, polymerase chain reaction, a more sophisticated version of the prostate specific antigen screening test (PSA) recently approved by the F.D.A. as a diagnostic tool, detects prostate cells floating freely in the blood, which would indicate that cancer has spread beyond the prostate. Up until now, only advanced cancers could be detected with the PSA test. If the blood test shows the cancer spreading into the bloodstream, patients could be offered hormonal therapy or newer forms of adjuvant therapy, instead of biopsying and removing the prostate, which can be a painful procedure. This has a greater likelihood of improving the quality and length of a man's life. With refinements to this test, drawn blood may be all that's necessary to help physicians evaluate the extent of prostate cancer in the future.
