JOSLIN OFFERS TWO ONE-DAY CLASSES IN THE BASIC MANAGEMENT OF DIABETES
---------------------------------------------------------------------

* Adults with diabetes will benefit from a one-day class, "The Basics of 
Diabetes Management," on Tuesday, September 13, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., 
at the Joslin Center for Diabetes at Wills and Jefferson. The class will 
also be offered on Tuesday, October 18. The center is located on the sixth 
floor of 211 S. Ninth Street.

You'll receive invaluable information on insulin and medications, blood 
glucose monitoring, prevention of complications, nutrition, exercise, and 
stress and coping from Joslin's multidisciplinary staff.

You may bring a nondiabetic family member or close friend with you to 
class free of charge. Just notify us when you make your 
own reservation.

If you have a blood glucose meter, please bring it along because you'll 
have an opportunity to ask questions about its use.

The cost of the program is $50, plus a fee for a take-home book - $2.95 
if you don't take insulin, and $8.50 if you do - payable when you register 
that morning. 

You'll receive a 33-percent discount on parking if you park at the Wills 
Eye Hospital garage on Ninth Street between Walnut and Locust streets. Just 
have your ticket validated at the security desk inside Wills Eye Hospital's 
main entrance.

Participants are asked to bring their own lunch, which can be kept in a 
refrigerator on the premises.

FAMILY MEDICINE NOW IN CHARGE OF EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT, HOUSE COVERAGE

* Thomas Jefferson University Hospital - Ford Rd Campus's focus on primary 
care and family medicine was strengthened on July 1 when Jefferson's 
department of family medicine, under the direction of John L. Randall, MD, 
chairman, assumed responsibility for the Ford Road Campus emergency 
department and house physician coverage.

Prior to July 1, Jefferson Emergecy Medicine Associates oversaw the 
emergency department, and house physician coverage was provided by an 
outside management company.  "Dr. John Randall is very enthusiastic about 
family mediicine's new role here.  He sees the Ford Road Campus as an 
excellent site for development of a family medicine presence," said Robert 
J. Moylan, administrator.


BUSINESS HEALTH SERVICES' SEMINAR FOCUSES ON HEALTH REFORM, MANAGED CARE

* Jefferson's Business Health Services will conduct a seminar "Health Reform 
and Managed Care - Gazing Into the Future," for the corporate community.  
The Wednesday, September 21, program, which is part of Business Health 
Services ongoing outreach to the corporate community, will be held from 
8:30 to 11:30 a.m., at 107 Bluemle Life Sciences Building.

Featured presenters will be Jefferson's David B. Nash, MD, director of 
health policy and clinical outcomes; Steven Zatz, MD, US Healthcare 
Algorithms and Richard Gilfilan, MD, Keystone HealthPlan East.  

Quarterly programs of Business Health Services are designed to keep the 
corporate community informed about health issues and to encourage open 
dialogue between business and the major participants in the healthcare 
arena.

NEW CLASSES, NEW COURSES AT JEFFERSON TRAINING CENTER

* A new look and title for the Jefferson Training Center's course catalog 
mean exciting things are happening in human resources developement.

This fall's 23 courses developed by human resources development staff 
offer a variety of course options for all employees.

Departments will receive the course catalog in mid-August. Employees are 
encouraged to review its contents and sign up quickly to take advantage of 
these outstanding training programs.
