========================= JeffNEWS, August 16, 1994 ========================= THE JEFFERSON 2000 FUND Reuling Gifts Approach $1 Million --------------------------------- A recent unrestricted gift of $660,000 to Jefferson Medical College (JMC) from the Roberta B. Reuling Trust brings the Reuling family's total philanthropic support for Thomas Jefferson University to almost $1 million. The fact that this gift has not been restricted to a particular project gives JMC the freedom to use the funds where they are most immediately needed. Gifts received in the 1980s from the estates of Mrs. Reuling and her husband, James R. Reuling, MD, JMC '14, amounted to more than $316,000 in unrestricted funds, furnishing student financial aid at the College of Allied Health Sciences and funding capital renovations, special activities and the discretionary account of the dean of JMC. In 1972, Dr. and Mrs. Reuling established four separate charitable remainder trusts, with Jefferson as their ultimate beneficiary. The trusts provided income to the Ruelings and some of their heirs during their lifetimes, while ensuring that Jefferson would eventually receive these funds. Through Jefferson's gift planning programs, trusts and estates account annually for more than 80 percent of unrestricted gifts to the University, or between $4 million and $5 million. This amounts to the lion's share of private support for scholarships, fellowships and professorships. "The Rueling charitable trusts show how alumni and friends can provide for their own financial security and still help Jefferson to maintain its excellence," said Francis J. McGovern, director of development for gift planning. "Often, grateful alumni, former patients and their families have designated the University, hospital or one of the three colleges as beneficiaries of their trusts or estates. Such gifts usually range from several hundred to several million dollars." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
