========================= JeffNEWS, August 16, 1994 ========================= PeopleNOTES ----------- DR. MORITZ APPOINTED DIVISION CHIEF Jefferson's department of surgery has appointed Michael J. Moritz, MD, associate professor of surgery, as chief of the division of transplantation surgery. The announcement was made by Francis E. Rosato, MD, the Samuel D. Gross Professor of Surgery and department chaiman. Dr. Moritz will concentrate on expanding the liver transplant program, which he has headed since 1990, and on instituting a pancreas transplant. He will also be cooperating with the division of cardiothoracic surgery in formulating heart and lung transplant programs. Dr. Moritz has been acting director of the division since 1991. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland. Dr. Moritz completed a residency in general surgery at Jefferson, followed by a fellowship in surgical research and transplantation at Jefferson DR. POMERANTZ RECEIVES OUTSTANDING INVESTIGATOR AWARD Roger Pomerantz, MD, associate professor of medicine and director of the division of infectious diseases, received the first annual Outstanding Investigator of the Year award presented by the department of medicine. The award, for achievement during the 1993-94 academic year, recognized a novel approach to gene therapy for the AIDS virus, research which was published in the May 24 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Members of the department nominated several candidates whose accomplishments were then submitted to three scientists outside the University for a final selection. The award consists of a photographic portrait of Dr. Pomerantz and a plaque. Co-researchers are Duan Lingxun, PhD, research assistant professor of medicine, and Omar Bagasra, MD, PhD, research associate professor of medicine. DR. ZECCARDI NAMED MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF CITY EMS The fire department of the City of Philadelphia has announced the appointment of Joseph A. Zeccardi, MD, clinical associate professor of surgery, as the new medical director of Philadelphia's Emergency Medical Services. As medical director, Dr. Zeccardi, who continues to direct the division of emergency medicine, will oversee and coordinate the review of paramedic field performance and prehospital care, a well as quality assurance activities within the Emergency Medical Services department. In conjunction with this appointment, the fire department has entered into contracts for medical command facilities with Jefferson Hospital and three other area hospitals. SCOTT LIBRARIAN HONORED For her significant contributions to the profession and the chapter, Elizabeth R. Warner, MSLS, AHIP, education services librarian, was presented with the Medical Library Association, Philadelphia Regional Chapter, 1994 Achievement Award. The Achievement Award is the chapter's highest award and was given to Ms. Warner during the chapter's annual banquet in April. Ms. Warner, who has been a member of the local chapter for almost two decades, has held numerous offices within the organization. She has been a former president, Council representative, continuing education course developer and has served on numerous committees.
