======================== JeffNEWS, May 17, 1994 ======================== THE JEFFERSON 2000 FUND Three Grants Help My Sister's Place Expand ------------------------------------------ Jefferson's Family Center, a unique nationally and internationally recognized program that helps drug-dependent pregnant women and their children break the multigenerational cycle of drug abuse, recently received three grants for its residential component, My Sister's Place. The grants - $125,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; $50,000 from The Connelly Foundation, and $15,000 from The 1957 Charity Trust - will cover the cost of renovations that will double the capacity of My Sister's Place by expanding living space and providing furnishings to accommodate 20 women and their children. "Women come to My Sister's Place not only to become drug-free, but to gain economic independence and empowerment to create a healthier environment for themselves and their children," said Karol Kaltenbach, PhD, who directs the Family Center. Located on Kingsessing Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia, My Sister's Place provides a bright, cheerful atmosphere for the residents. The Family Center, a freestanding program of Jefferson Medical College's department of pediatrics, relies on federal and private sources for funding. The Miami-based Knight Foundation supports social programs in communities where Knight-Ridder Newspapers operate. Knight-Ridder newspapers in this area are _The Philadelphia Inquirer_ and _Philadelphia Daily News_. The Connelly Foundation is a local, private grant-making organization whose purpose is to improve the quality of life in the Delaware Valley. The 1957 Charity Trust, another local foundation, supports human services and social welfare organizations in the five-county Philadelphia region. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
