Crown Cork & Seal Gift Funds New Dialysis Machines

The Crown Cork & Seal Company, a Philadelphia-based manufacturer, has 
committed $100,000 to the Jefferson Dialysis Program for the purchase of 
eight new dialysis machines over the next four years to replace existing 
equipment.

"My staff and I are very pleased that a corporation from the wider 
community shares our concern for our chronically ill patients," said 
Antonia Mangold, RN, MSN, the program's nursing care coordinator. Ms. 
Mangold is now testing machines that are technologically state-of-the-art. 

"Crown Cork & Seal's grant allows us to obtain dialysis equipment with 
data processing capabilities," she said. "The machines can record 
information, a task our nurses would otherwise perform manually." 

Jefferson's Center City dialysis facility is open between 7 a.m. and 11 
p.m., six days a week, allowing patients to better accommodate work, school 
and family schedules. The dialysis program serves 106 patients, each of 
whom receives a four-hour dialysis treatment three days a week. 

The patients, who come from all walks of life, range in age from 18 to 
those who are elderly. All of them have chronic, "end-stage" renal disease 
and need regular dialysis to stay alive. Many, however, can still live 
productive lives because of this program, which is now 10 years old.

"Patients and staff become like family because they're together so often 
every week," said Ms. Mangold. "We are thrilled that these new machines 
will allow us more time to talk with our patients and give them the 
psychological support they need. It seems to us that Crown Cork & Seal, 
through its generous gift, has joined the Dialysis Program `family'."
