=========================== JeffNEWS, February 21, 1995 =========================== Type II, Noninsulin-dependent Diabetes Mellitus - Why Prevention Is So Important ------------------------------------------------- Type II, noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is the most common type of diabetes, occurring much more frequently than insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Ninety to 95 percent of people who have diabetes have this form of the disease. About 500,000 to 700,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Approximately 14 million people in the United States have diabetes, but almost half of them don't know they have it and aren't under medical care. About 80 percent of people with Type II diabetes are overweight. Each year, this disease claims approximately 150,000 lives in the United States. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
