========================== JeffNEWS, October 25, 1994 ========================== NewsBRIEFS PRESIDENT BRUCKER ELECTED TO PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL ORGANIZATION -------------------------------------------------------------- Paul C. Brucker, MD, University president, has been elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Members are elected on the basis of professional achievement and of demonstrated interest, concern and involvement with problems and critical issues that affect the health of the public. Established as a unit of the academy, the institute is broadly based in the biomedical sciences and health professions, as well as related aspects of the behavioral and social sciences, administration, law, the physical sciences and engineering. The institute is concerned with the protection and advancement of the health professions and sciences, the promotion of research and development pertinent to health and the improvement of health care. There are only 493 active members nationally. PHARMACY STAFF HOSTED INTERNATIONAL LUNCH ----------------------------------------- Many of the pharmacy department's staff hail from countries around the world, including China, India, Jamaica and Lebanon. Because they are proud of their heritage and wanted to share their diverse cultures with their colleagues, they hosted an international luncheon to which they brought foods characteristic of these countries to share with their coworkers. The organizers were: Elham Bshouti, secretary, from Lebanon; and Synally Myers, billing clerk, and Patsy Sowri, technician, both from Jamaica. THERE'S NOTHING LIKE A GOOD BOOK -------------------------------- The children at the Palumbo Middle School at 9th and Catherine in South Philadelphia would like your help. If you have any books that you feel are appropriate for the school's library, we would appreciate your contribution. Beginning Monday, November 21 until November 23, Thomas Jefferson University will sponsor a book drive to benefit the South Philadelphia school. The students have begun to design boxes to receive your books. During the book drive, these receptacles will be located at the information desks of the following buildings: Bluemle Life Sciences, Edison, 11th Street side of Gibbon, Jefferson Alumni Hall and the Medical Office Building. JEFFERSON CO-SPONSORS EMERGENCY CARE AND THE LAW CONFERENCE ----------------------------------------------------------- Because the need for improved understanding of the impact of law on the delivery of emergency health services has never been greater, Jefferson Medical College and the American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) are cosponsoring a medical-legal conference, "Emergency Care and the Law." The event will take place at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia, from Monday, November 3, through Wednesday, November 5. "The conference will provide essential medical and legal information about emergency care for physicians, nurses, emergency care professionals, lawyers, risk managers and students of these professions." said conference chair, Jack W. Snyder, MD, JD, PhD, FCLM, assistant professor of emergency medicine and laboratory medicine. Speakers will include William J. Curran, JD, former editor of the law- medicine notes for the New England Journal of Medicine and professor emeritus of legal medicine at Harvard University, and Cyril H. Wecht, MD, JD, forensic pathologist, who differed with the Warren Commission's single- bullet theory of President John F. Kennedy's assassination.
