========================== JeffNEWS, October 25, 1994 ========================== College of Allied Health Sciences Conducts Research Institute for National Dental Hygiene Grant ------------------------------------------------------------- The College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS) conducted a Summer Research Institute at Jefferson as part of its three-year, $545,000 grant from the Bureau of Health Professions to develop, implement and evaluate a National Center for Dental Hygiene Research, the model of which can be used as a prototype for other allied health disciplines. The Summer Research Institute, organized by the College's department of dental hygiene and the center for collaborative research, trained teams in collaborative research, research methods and grantsmanship. Teams are composed of two educators and two clinicians headed by a mentor who is a member of the grant's advisory panel. This year, teams from the University of California San Francisco, the University of Minnesota, the University of Detroit Mercy, Old Dominion University and Thomas Jefferson University attended the program. "Each team left the institute with a completed pilot study proposal to implement and will continue to receive technical assistance and support for building on their pilot study results," said principal investigator Jane L. Forrest, RDH, EdD, dental hygiene acting chairman. In addition to validating a national research agenda for dental hygiene, which was accomplished, other expected outcomes of the grant include coordinating nationwide research efforts based on the priorities of the research agenda and establishing networks to support developing researchers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
