========================== JeffNEWS, October 25, 1994 ========================== Lectures Internationally Recognized Authority on Cell Function, Development Regulators is Rehfuss Lecturer ------------------------------------------------------ Michael B. Sporn, MD, chief of the laboratory of chemoprevention of the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health, will present the 31st annual Martin E. Rehfuss Lecture, Thursday, November 10, at 4 p.m. in the Connelly Conference Room, Bluemle Life Sciences Building. Dr. Sporn's topic is "Transforming Growth Fact á: A Multifunctional Cell Regulator." He is an internationally recognized scholar and one of the discoverers of transforming growth factor-á (TGF-á). More recently, he has led efforts to utilize TGF-á as an adjunctive substance to treat a wide range of diseases in areas ranging from ophthalmology and dermatology to neurology and cardiology. He serves on many editorial boards including the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Molecular Endocrinology and Growth Factors. He is, as well, associate editor of Cancer Research. The Martin E. Rehfuss Lecture was created and has been endowed by the Percival E. and Ethel Brown Foerderer family in memory of Dr. Rehfuss, professor of clinical medicine, Jefferson Medical College. James W. Strickland, MD Presents Kaufmann Lectureship, November 11 ------------------------------------------------------------------ James W. Strickland, MD, chairman of the department of hand surgery of St. Vincent's Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana, and clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, will be the visiting professor in hand surgery for the 18th annual Dorothy B. Kaufmann Lectureship, sponsored by the Hand Rehabilitation Foundation and Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Strickland is first vice president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and past president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. "Changes in the Practice of Medicine Resulting from the Influx of Managed Care and Pending Health Reform Legislation" is the topic of the Kaufmann Lectureship, which will be presented on Friday, November 11, at 8 p.m., following cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. at the Union League, Broad and Sansom Streets.
