========================== JeffNEWS, October 25, 1994 ========================== You and Jefferson Hospital's Mission ------------------------------------ While you focus on the everyday tasks associated with your job, it might be easy to forget the broader understanding of the hospital's role within our community. Knowing how your role complements or supports the goals of the hospital should help you to place your work in perspective. Our mission is: To provide state-of-the-art, compassionate and cost-effective healthcare services, to teach future healthcare professionals and to lead in the research, development and introduction of improved methods of healthcare delivery to benefit everyone. The Hospital is committed to improving the health care of the communities it serves and providing a full range of integrated healthcare services in a manner that is convenient for patients and that respects the dignity of individuals. Here are some examples of individuals working to support the hospital's mission. Heidi Purvis, RN, MSN, nursing care coordinator ----------------------------------------------- "As a nurse manager, I identify and manage the resources necessary to provide skilled, compassionate nursing care to medical and oncology patients. This entails mentoring and coaching the nursing staff, promoting student education, integrating new technologies and evaluating patient care delivery strategies. The example I set helps reinforce to staff that the patient is our primary focus." Dana Traylor, distribution technician, SPD ------------------------------------------ "My job is to keep the emergency and trauma center fully stocked with the necessary medical supplies. I'm contributing to the hospital's mission of cost-effective, quality patient care by making sure doctors and nurses have what they need, when they need it, in order to care for patients as quickly and efficiently as possible." Kathryn E. Goldberg, RD, director, department of nutrition and dietetics ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "My role as a director is to make sure the department delivers quality services in a cost-effective manner. In addition, I provide leadership and resources so my staff can effectively perform their responsibilities, which cross every segment of the hospital's mission. For instance, nutrition and dietetics employees prepare meals for patients, visitors and staff. Clinical dietitians assess the nutritional needs of patients, participate in research activities, educate allied health and medical students and train future dietitians from a local college. The outpatient nutrition service meets the needs of local community members by offering individual counseling on weight control and diet, sponsoring healthy cooking classes and managing the Dining With Heart program." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
