========================== JeffNEWS, October 25, 1994 ========================== Jeffersonians Participate in Pain Update: 1994 ---------------------------------------------- Pain Update: 1994, the fourth annual meeting of the Greater Philadelphia Pain Society, will take place Friday, October 28, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Adam's Mark Hotel in Philadelphia. "It's vital for healthcare professionals to realize that many conditions which can be devastating in the long run are treatable if recognized early," said Stephen D. Lande, PhD, president of the society's executive board. Evan Frank, MD, PhD, assistant professor of anesthesiology and director of Jefferson's Pain Center, is vice president of the society's executive board. Among the conditions are reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) and conditions caused by repetitive motion, such as carpal tunnel and thoracic outlet syndromes, which may cause permanent disability to the hand or upper arm. "We believe that once healthcare professionals learn what to look for, they can refer their patients for treatment to specialists in these areas in a timely fashion," said Steven Mandel, MD, clinical professor of neurology. Jeffersonians and their topics are: o Clinical Syndromes of RSD and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) - Robert J. Schwartzman, MD, professor and chairman of neurology o Surgical Treatment of TOS - Stanton N.
