Hedvig Hricak, MD, PhD, to Present 13th Annual Hodes Lecture
Dr. Hricak served as Chief of Uroradiology and Abdominal Imaging at UCSF for a number of years. In 1999, she was appointed Chair of the Department of Radiology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and Professor of Radiology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. She has been a prolific researcher with over 230 peer-reviewed articles and 112 other review articles, and has been a participant in numerous NIH grants.
Dr. Hricak’s research interests have focused upon the use of imaging techniques in detection and staging of prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and cervical cancer. She has also worked recently on cost-benefit analysis of the value of subspecialization in oncologic imaging.

New Books From Jefferson Authors Available at the Bookstore
Marshall Goldberg, MD, Professor of Medicine, Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, and Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, along with Martin Weisberg, MD, Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, have just published books that are available to Jeffersonians at the Thomas Jefferson University Bookstore.
Dr. Goldberg’s novel is called "Managed Murder" and is about the mob and the American healthcare system. The new book by Dr. Weisberg, entitled "The Alternative," is a medical thriller focusing on the mind and emotions of a gynecologist and the pressures exerted by managed care and the medical device community.

John F. Ditunno Jr., MD, Receives ASIA Lifetime Achievement Award
The American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) presented its ASIA Lifetime Achievement Award to John F. Ditunno Jr., MD, Director, Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of Delaware Valley, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH), and Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Jefferson Medical College (JMC), Thomas Jefferson University, at the organization’s 26th Annual Meeting held this month. Dr. Ditunno is the eleventh recipient of ASIA’s most prestigious award. Established in 1988, the Lifetime Achievement Award is given by the ASIA Board of Directors to commend outstanding individuals who have made a significant contribution to the world of spinal injury care.
During his career, Dr. Ditunno has served in many leadership roles and been recognized by both national and international organizations. He was formerly Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine for TJUH, the Michie Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at JMC for 28 years, and the past president of ASIA. Other highlights of his career include: Spinal cord injury research focusing on neurological recovery with over 100 published scientific articles and book chapters; recipient of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine’s John Stanley Coulter Lecture, the American Paraplegia Society’s Donald Munro Lecture and the American Spinal Injury Association’s Heiner Sell Lecture; current Chair of the Scientific Committee of the International Medical Society of Paraplegia; and Past President of the Association of Academic Physiatrists and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Jefferson Urologist Wins 1999 Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award
Ehab El-Gabry, MD, Research Fellow, Department of Urology, Jefferson Medical College (JMC), Thomas Jefferson University, won the 1999 Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award. Dr. El-Gabry was nominated for the honor by S. Grant Mulholland, MD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Urology, JMC.
The grant consists of a $2,000 donation from Pfizer, Inc. in Dr. El-Gabry’s name to Jefferson’s Urology Department. Dr. El-Gabry’s research focuses on the area of uro-oncology, the science of urology and improving patient care through his research. His other interests include prostate cancer imaging, endourological procedures and laser surgery. His extensive research has been cited in numerous publications.
