Arthritis Foundation Honors Two Jefferson Physicians
The Arthritis Foundation, Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter, chose two Jefferson physicians to honor among its five annual awards in the fields of orthopaedics, rheumatology, research arthritis awareness and contributions in overcoming arthritis.

The two chosen were Sergio A. Jimenez, MD, The Dorrance H. Hamilton Professor of Medicine, Vice-Chairman for Research, and Director, Division of Rheumatology, Jefferson Medical College (JMC), and Richard H. Rothman, MD, PhD, founder and Director of the Rothman Institute at Jefferson, and James Edwards Professor and Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery, JMC.

Dr. Jimenez received the Joseph Lee Hollander, MD, Award, presented annually to the medical professional who exemplifies excellence and achievement in rheumatology. Dr. Hollander is recognized as one of the founding fathers of modern rheumatology and is a founder of the Arthritis Foundation.

Dr. Rothman received the Sir John Charnley Award for excellence and achievement in orthopaedics. Sir John Charnley was an English orthopaedic surgeon who in 1962 invented the modern hip replacement. He was a master surgeon, innovator and bio-engineer. Surgeons around the globe have studied his techniques.

The Arthritis Foundation supports research to find ways to cure and prevent arthritis and seeks to improve the quality of life for those affected by arthritis.

NIH Appoints Sergio Jimenez, MD, To NIAMS Board
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has appointed Sergio A. Jimenez, MD, Director of the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, Jefferson Medical College (JMC), to a five-year term as a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Institutes of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).

Kimmel Cancer Center Receives National Award from NSABP
The National Surgical Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) presented the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson with an award of recognition for "new and outstanding efforts in breast cancer prevention."

The Kimmel Cancer Center was one of only eight centers in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to receive the award for exceeding the NSABP's projected study and screening numbers as a new NSABP clinical center for the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR) clinical trial.

The award recognizes the efforts of the following institutions for participating in the STAR trial through the Kimmel Cancer Center:

Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, Atlantic City Medical Center, Frankford Hospital, Grand View Hospital, Lima (Ohio) Memorial Hospital, Mercy Community Hospital, Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia, Riddle Memorial Hospital and Underwood Memorial Hospital.

The STAR trial at Jefferson is led by its Principal Investigator, Michael B. Dabrow, DO, Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, Jefferson Medical College, and Susan Miller-Samuel, RN, MSN, STAR Program Coordinator.
