Major Changes to Jefferson's Transportation Programs Announced

John P. Sullivan, Vice President for Administration, Thomas Jefferson University, has announced major changes to Jefferson's transportation programs effective August 1.

"Jefferson's objectives are to provide employees with additional parking opportunities at relatively inexpensive rates and, in addition, to encourage usage of mass transit," Mr. Sullivan wrote in a letter to employees describing the changes.

A summary follows:

Lower Costs, Longer Hours for Remote Parking/Shuttle Service
The cost to park at Jefferson's Remote Lot on Delaware Avenue is now $40 per month, reduced from $75. This averages to about $2 per day.

Non-bargaining employees can arrange for payroll deduction of the $40 monthly fee on a pre-tax basis by completing a salary reduction form.

The cost of daily parking passes, available on a limited basis, is now $2.50, reduced from $4.

Hours are now 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., instead of 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Jefferson's Subsidy of Employee Mass Transit Costs Doubled
Jefferson's subsidy of the cost of SEPTA and PATCO items is now doubled to a 10 to 20 percent subsidy, from the previous 5 to 10 percent. This demonstrates Jefferson's commitment to encouraging utilization of public transportation.

Parking and Mass Transit Purchases - Now Tax Free
Now, non-bargaining employees can set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified parking and transportation costs up to IRS limits of $65 per month for mass transit and $175 per month for parking. This means parking coupons, monthly passes to several parking lots, SEPTA tokens, trail passes and train tickets, and PATCO items, may now be purchased from the CSO through salary deduction on a pre-tax basis.

For more information on these program changes, contact CSO at 5-6417 or the Employee Benefits Section of the Human Resources Department at 3-7858. Brochures are available at both locations.
