TJU Joining With Hospitals in Turkey in New Affiliate Agreement
Thomas Jefferson University has entered into an agreement with the Acibadem Health Group in Istanbul, Turkey. Under the agreement, Acibadem Hospital and Acibadem Carousel Hospital in Turkey will be affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University. Construction of Acibadem Carousel Hospital is nearing completion, with opening scheduled for late May. The Acibadem Health Group also includes three outpatient clinics.
The agreement calls for licensing the Jefferson name to Acibadem, in effect establishing the Turkish health group as an educational affiliate of Jefferson.
Jefferson thus becomes the first academic medical institution in the Delaware Valley region to license its name to a healthcare organization abroad.
The agreement is in keeping with recent urging by the White House that educational institutions, the business community and others work together on increasing and broadening the United States’ commitment to international education.
Acibadem, which translates as “Bitter Almond,” is on the Asian side of the city of Istanbul, with the new Carousel hospital to be on the European side. Staffs are English-speaking.
The licensing agreement will see Jefferson providing training and specialized treatment for 18 to 25 physicians, allowing the Acibadem group to send Turkish physicians to Jefferson to study and learn medical specialties such as the use of ultrasound.
Jefferson’s Ultrasound Research and Education Institute, for example, promotes stronger ties with healthcare facilities and organizations around the world that share an interest in diagnostic ultrasound. The Institute regularly trains physicians from other nations, and has done so for years.
Acibadem, through the agreement, will also be able to refer Turkish patients to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for specialized care.
And Jefferson department chairmen will conduct symposia in Turkey, with S. Grant Mulholland, MD, The Nathan Lewis Hatfield Professsor of Urology and Chairman, being the first to do so in the fall.
There will also be opportunity for Jefferson staff researchers, residents and students to work and study in Turkey.
