Vital Signs: December 1999
Mark Kahn, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery, Department of Surgery, Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, has been voted President-Elect of the Delaware Valley Vascular Society. Dr. Kahn has been a member of the Society since 1991, serving in various capacities including the Executive Committee. The Society is one of the largest local vascular societies in the country with over 100 members. HealthWorks – Achieving Balance with Diabetes – the Outpatient Self Management Education Program for Diabetes for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, received the prestigious American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate recognizing it as a quality diabetes self-management education program on January 5. The award, signifies ADA’s belief that this program offers high-quality diabetes self-management education – an essential component of effective diabetes treatment. The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that education programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. The standards were developed and tested under the auspices of the National Diabetes Advisory Board in 1983 and were revised by the diabetes community in 1994. Programs applying for ADA recognition voluntarily submit to a rigorous review process by experts in the field of diabetes who evaluate each program on its ability to provide patients with a comprehensive individualized education program. Programs achieving recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about diabetes management. “The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide,” says Jefferson’s HealthWorks Program Director Renee Liberoni, MPH. “And, of course, it assures that the consumer will likely receive high-quality service.” Education Recognition status is verified by an official certificate from ADA and is awarded for three years. Recognized programs may use the ADA recognition logo and statement in promotional materials.
