Jefferson Faculty Club Now Serving Up 'New Millennium' Dining Style

Express "lunch on the go" is now featured at the Jefferson Faculty Club, suggested by Clara A. Callahan, MD, Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs, Jefferson Medical College (JMC). Here, Dr. Callahan puts her idea into practice as she serves herself a healthy -- and quick-- salad to take to her office. Meanwhile, two other members meet for a collegial working lunch in the relaxed surroundings: George C. Brainard, PhD, Professor of Neurology, JMC, and Faculty Club President, and Elizabeth Van Bockstaele, PhD, Associate Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology, JMC. Robert Neroni Photography

Recognizing that habits and tastes change with the times, the Jefferson Faculty Club now offers a dining approach in tune with today's work styles.

"What we offer is always healthy and pleasing to the palate, but now we also offer a practical 'express' take-out option when busy schedules steal time for a more leisurely lunch," says George C. Brainard, PhD, Professor of Neurology, Jefferson Medical College (JMC) and Faculty Club President.

"Over the past 10 years or so, there's no question that Jeffersonians' habits and preferences for lunch have changed, exactly in step with the work culture as a whole," says Dr. Brainard.

"Everywhere, surveys show, people are eating lunch at their desks as much as, or more than, going out."

Ideal for Both Choices

"We have designed an approach at the Faculty Club that is ideal for both choices. Two or more Jeffersonians can meet for a comfortable working lunch that combines business and collegiality. Or, you can call ahead and order any item from our full menu -- ranging from a quick salad or sandwich to a full hot meal -- for 'lunch on the go' when you just can't leave your busy office or lab."

Dr. Brainard stresses other benefits:

•An on-campus environment fostering friendship and collegiality in relaxed, comfortable surroundings

•Convenient location, especially in bad weather

•Variety of lunch items, including daily specials

•Reciprocal membership in other Faculty Clubs, many of which offer lodging and other amenities as well as meals.

"Joining the Jefferson Faculty Club means you automatically have privileges in 100 other Faculty Clubs in the United States, Canada and abroad," Dr. Brainard adds.

On the Jefferson campus, during October, any member can bring a guest at half-price for one meal.

Who is Eligible?

It's a misconception, Dr. Brainard notes, that only teaching faculty can join.

"The Faculty Club is open to a range of Jeffersonians, including senior administrators and staff, senior residents, postdoctoral fellows, senior librarians and other groups. In fact, nearly one-fifth of current members are not faculty members."

To find out if you are eligible, or to get an application, contact Club Secretary Joan E. Schott, Associate Director, Alumni Giving Program, JMC, at 5-1683, or Dr. Brainard at 5-7644.
