James D. Plumb, MD, Receives 1999 Humanism in Medicine Award from AAMC, Pfizer

James D. Plumb, MD, Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Jefferson Medical College (JMC), has been recognized as one of 44 physicians nationwide selected by medical students for the 1999 AAMC Humanism in Medicine Award. Sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, the award annually honors medical school faculty physicians who embody the finest qualities in a healer who teaches healing. The award acknowledges the role of humanism in medical education and entrusts students with the responsibility of selecting their own role models. Eight years ago, Dr. Plumb helped several medical students institute the Jeff HOPE Homeless Shelter Clinic and Urban Healthcare Project. Under his leadership and guidance, the student-directed Jeff HOPE has now grown to five sites, with support from the departments of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and others.
