Physician
and nursing staff members, together with numerous other employees
and more than 25 volunteers, enacted a Code Orange drill as part of
the hospital's emergency readiness during the Republican National
Convention in Philadelphia. The drill scenario, coordinated by the
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Emergency Preparedness Committee,
was a mock chemical exposure to a large crowd on Market Street and
prepared hospital staff to receive large numbers of casualties from
a hazardous material exposure. In making employees and staff aware
of the Code Orange plan and particularly of specific departmental
procedures, the drill helped ensure the hospital's preparedness for
any future emergency, whatever its cause. Here, emergency staff and
volunteers enact a trauma episode. At left, in decontamination gear,
is Nancy Glatfelder, RN, Emergency Department, reaching out to help
a mock victim depicted by a volunteer while another volunteer dashes
up to help. Don Walker Photography
The
Jefferson Medical College (JMC) student selected for one of the 2000
AOA National Medical Student Research Awards, Mary Nguyen, JMC '03,
of Media, PA, reviews her research proposal with Troy L. Thompson
II, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, JMC, and adviser
to the Jefferson chapter of AOA, the National Medical Honor Society
for medical students, and Elaine Collins, who administratively assists
with AOA. Ms. Nguyen's research involves testing a new use of the
drug Amifostine ® and its protection of healthy cells against
the adverse side effects of chemotherapy, specifically in treatment
of leukemia. During the summer, Ms. Nguyen worked with Neal Flomenberg,
MD, Professor of Medicine, JMC, and Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant
Program, in carrying out this research. Winning the $3,000 scholarship
made Ms. Nguyen the first JMC student in three years to receive one
of these AOA research awards. Don Walker Photography
