American Health Lists Our Nation's Best Doctors

Gordon F. Schwartz, MD, MBA, professor of surgery and a specialist in diseases of the breast, was one of six Jefferson physicians selected by their peers as among the best doctors in the United States, named in the March 1996 issue of American Health magazine (circulation 1,000,689). Others include: Walter J.Curran Jr., MD, chairman of the department of radiation oncology; Francis E. Rosato, MD, chairman of the department of surgery; Richard H. Rothman, MD, PhD, chairman of orthopaedic surgery; Robert D. Fry, MD, director of the division of colorectal surgery, and James E. Fish, MD, director of the division of pulmonary medicine and critical care.

In addition, three Wills Eye Hospital physicians ranked among the nation's best in their field. They included Joseph H. Calhoun, MD, director of the Wills pediatric ophthalmology service; Peter R. Laibson, MD, director of the cornea service at Wills and Jerry A. Shields, MD, director of the Wills oncology service. Wills physicians comprise the department of ophthalmology of Jefferson Medical College. Also ranked in the field of pulmonology was Andrew Pitman, MD, medical director of the ICU, Bryn Mawr Hospital, a member of the Jefferson Health System.
