Integration Update
Redesigning Jefferson for 2000
Redesigning Jefferson for 2000 is under way. The majority of the design
team members for the project have been appointed. Each design team, its
focus and target and savings goals and team members' names appear in the
accompanying chart and lists. While some teams have yet to be finalized
and some team members are still to be appointed, the team structure is,
for the most part, set, and design team members are starting to meet.
"Redesigning Jefferson for 2000 is key to our ability to maintain Jefferson's
strong competitive position in the managed care market," said Thomas
J. Lewis, senior vice president for healthcare administration and chief
executive officer for the hospital.
"The employees who contribute to the redesign process will play a vital
role in shaping Jefferson's future. They have made a commitment to identify
areas that will help us meet our goal of saving $75 million over the next
three years. We appreciate their spirit of cooperation as we all take on
this challenge," Mr. Lewis explained.
Redesign ideas that teams will review fall into three major categories:
- Improvement - near-term ideas that can be implemented within one to
six months.
- Redesign - mid-term ideas that can be implemented within six to 18 months
- Innovation - long-term ideas that can be implemented within 18 to 36
months
Design teams have savings targets or goals, both long and short term, as
well as stretch targets. (See Design Team Target chart below, which indicates
targets and breaks out near-term goals in parentheses. For example, the
target for Ancillary and Diagnostic Processes is $7.5 million, $2.5 million
of which is near term.)
"After studying other institutions that have initiated a redesign process,"
said Alan L. Brechbill, chief operating officer for the hospital, "we
have identified stretch goals for each team. Our examination showed that,
in many instances, teams are able to surpass their targets, and we anticipate
that Jeffersonians will meet this challenge with similar success."
