Jefferson Researchers Develop
Genetic Test to Identify Uterine Tumors as Malignant or Benign
Researchers from Thomas Jefferson
University have developed a new genetic test that uses reverse
transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to identify
uterine tumors as malignant or benign.
Mutations in Cornea-Specific
Proteins Discovered as Cause of Fragile Eye Disease
Researchers have discovered genetic mututations that
cause Meesmann's corneal dystrophy, a fragile eye disease
characterized by a lifelong irritation of the cornea and a weak
eye surface vulnerable to injuries and infection that prevents
contact lens use.
Placental Leptin a
Possible New Growth Factor in Intrauterine and Newborn
Development
Pediatric researchers from the duPont Hospital for
Children, the close affiliate of Thomas Jefferson University,
have identified the presence of leptin, a protein linked with
obesity, in placental tissues and cells and at elevated levels in
the blood of newborns, suggesting that leptin aids in
intrauterine and neonatal growth and development.
