Joseph and Marie Field Endow Cerebrovascular Laboratory
In recognition of "the outstanding and very personal treatment, care and friendship" Mr. Joseph M. Field received last year from Dr. Robert H. Rosenwasser and his staff in the Department of Neurosurgery, Mr. Field, President and CEO of Entercom in Bala Cynwyd, and his wife, Marie, have pledged $250,000 toward the endowment of a cerebrovascular laboratory.
Named in honor of the Fields' gift, The Field Laboratory for Cerebrovascular Research focuses its investigations on blood vessels in the brain, and is involved in both basic and clinical research.
"With the generous donation of Joseph and Marie Field," states Dr. Rosenwasser, Director of the Division of Cerebrovascular Surgery and Interventional Neuroradiology, "our studies may bring us closer to improving patient care for the treatment of stroke and cerebrovascular injury."
Dr. Rosenwasser and his colleagues are concentrating their basic research on the mechanisms by which molecules called cytokines are produced by the cells in brain tissue following stroke and brain injury.
Although these molecules may sometimes act as beneficial growth factors that promote healing, in other instances cytokines can provoke tissue inflammation, clogging of blood vessels or damage to other neural tissue.
By finding ways to reduce the cascade of damaging effects of cytokines, Dr. Rosenwasser and his staff hope to increase the rate of success in patient recovery.
In addition, the Laboratory's clinical researchers are evaluating promising new stroke treatments currently being considered for FDA approval.
