Jefferson Welcomes Ronald Bolognese, MD, as New Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Ronald J. Bolognese, MD, has been appointed Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Jefferson Medical College. This move comes after 26 years at Pennsylvania Hospital, 11 of them spent as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Bolognese brings years of experience in general obstetrics and gynecology and a specialized interest in maternal-fetal medicine to a department with a history of excellence in high-risk obstetrics. "It is an honor to welcome someone with Dr. Bolognese's academic and clinical experience to head our department of obstetrics and gynecology," said Joseph S. Gonnella, MD, Dean, Jefferson Medical College and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Thomas Jefferson University, in announcing the appointment.
"Dr. Bolognese's knowledge, experience and compassion made him the ideal choice for Chairman of Jefferson's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology," noted Thomas J. Lewis, President and CEO of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. "He will certainly reinforce as well as enrich a department that has been well-recognized for its clinical excellence and its maternal-fetal medicine, high-risk obstetrics and gynecologic oncology programs."
Dr. Bolognese's areas of clinical interest include the identification and treatment of premature labor and premature membrane rupture, which account for well over 50 percent of pregnancy losses. He has also researched the use of ultrasound to identify cervical changes that often predict the onset of premature labor.
As part of his chairmanship at Jefferson, one of Dr. Bolognese's primary goals will be to integrate the services of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology throughout the Jefferson Health System (JHS). In addition, he plans to help build a research division within the department that will seek additional grant support for clinical research from national and international sources. Ultimately, Dr. Bolognese hopes to develop a healthcare center that will emphasize women's and children's health services throughout JHS.
Dr. Bolognese's work has been published in leading national journals including the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Journal of Reproductive Medicine and the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound. He maintains memberships in national and local professional and scientific societies including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the American Fertility and Sterility Society, the Pacific Coast Fertility Society, the Society of Perinatal Obstetricians (SPO), the Philadelphia Obstetrical Society and the Perinatal Society of Philadelphia.
Dr. Bolognese received a bachelor of arts degree from Princeton University and a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed an internship at Bryn Mawr Hospital and his residency at Pennsylvania Hospital.
