Association Honored at President's Club Dinner
The Alumni Association of Jefferson Medical
College was the recipient of the prestigious Cornerstone Award at
the 1997 President's Club Dinner held in the historic Crystal Tea
Room at the Wanamaker Building on October 3.

The Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Chinese Community Partnership for Health, in collaboration with Business Health Services, offered free flu vaccines to 40 senior citizens at On-Lok House on North 10th Street in Chinatown. Here Lih Yuh Chen, RN, Department of Nursing, administers the vaccine to 85-year-old Shui Chun Lee. Jefferson's Chinese Community Partnership is developing a community-based program to provide health education, community outreach, prenatal care and mental health services to Philadelphia's Chinese population, many of whom reside near Jefferson. appointed Director of the newly formed Cardiovascular Disease

Colorectal Cancer Registry Provides Counseling for Patients and
Families
Thomas Jefferson University's new Familial
Colorectal Cancer Registry is more than just a database of
faceless patients. While participants can benefit from learning
about their individual and family's risk of developing cancer,
scientists are hoping that by detailing a family's and patient's
history of disease, they will learn more about the nature of
cancerous tumors, in addition to how the disease develops.

The Departments of Urology and Radiology have agreed to join forces to establish a Prostate Ultrasound Imaging and Guided Biopsy Center. The new Center will be the first of its kind in the Philadelphia area. In addition to drawing on physician expertise from such an interdisciplinary effort, and having the convenience of a single location, patients at the new Center will benefit from the very latest technology, such as color Doppler imaging and 3D ultrasound. At a news conference spotlighting a new international collaboration on state-of-the-art cancer vaccine research is Joseph S. Gonnella, MD, Dean, Jefferson Medical College (JMC) and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Thomas Jefferson University (TJU). The joint effort between JMC and the Noguchi Medical Research Institute, based in Philadelphia and Tokyo, was announced by Ken-Ichiro Hasumi, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Electro-Chemical and Cancer Institute in Japan, and Visiting Professor of Medicine, JMC. The collaboration includes the endowment of a research fund and establishment of The Dr. K. Hasumi Associate Professorship for cancer research at JMC, whose first recipient is Takami Sato, MD, Research Assistant Professor of Medicine, JMC. Dr. Sato, whose expertise is in cancer immunology and immunotherapy, will study the biological activity of a cancer vaccine developed by Dr. Hasumi and used for many patients in Japan and other countries to fight various types of cancers. The collaboration also includes working with JMC researchers who are currently conducting clinical trials testing the effectiveness of a vaccine for malignant melanoma under the leadership of David Berd, MD, Professor of Medicine, JMC.
