Holding their graduation plaques are Jennifer Keedy, MD, and Robert Corrato, MD, the second pair of fellows to graduate from the one-year, postgraduate program. Two incoming fellows were welcomed at the luncheon, Hara Schwartz, MD, and Kenneth Chang, MD. Implemented in July 1995, the fellowship is a nationally unique collaborative program between Jefferson and Aetna US Healthcare, which provides the funding. The fellowship trains physicians to take influential roles in improving healthcare quality and efficiency across a variety of settings.


Jefferson Implements Formal Code Of Conduct

To guide Jeffersonians in achieving the highest ethical and professional standards, and complying with all applicable laws and regulations, the University has developed a formal Code of Conduct. The Code provides standards for employees' daily decisions and actions as they strive to meet the University's goals of quality health care, health professions education and international health-related research. An outline of the Code's key areas are as follows:

  1. The University Shall Comply With All Applicable Laws.

  2. The University Shall Conduct Its Affairs in Accordance With the Highest Ethical Standards.

  3. All Community Members Shall Support the University's Goals and Avoid Conflicts of Interest.

  4. The University Shall Strive to Attain the Highest Standards for All Aspects of Patient Care.

  5. The University Shall Provide Equal Opportunity and Respect the Dignity of all Members of the University Community.

  6. The University Shall Maintain the Highest Standards of Academic Integrity.

  7. The University Shall Maintain Proper and Accurate Records and a Relationship of Integrity With All Payor Sources.

  8. The University and Members of the Community Shall Conduct All Business Practices With Honesty and Integrity.

  9. The University Shall Have Proper Regard for Safety Within and Without the Community.

  10. The Code of Conduct Shall Be Integral to the Operation of the University and the Activities of the Community.

Every employee will receive a copy of the complete code. If any employee is aware of a Code of Conduct violation, the employee's immediate supervisor should be notified. If there is a belief that a supervisor is involved or for any other reason, employees can notify the University's Compliance Hotline at 1-888-5-COMPLY. The Code of Conduct protects anyone making a good faith report of a violation. In addition, all reports to the Compliance Hotline may be made on a confidential, no-name basis.


Allen E. Chandler, MD, JMC '61, Elected Alumni Trustee

Chandler, MD, JMC '61, has been elected to a three-year term as Alumni Trustee, Thomas Jefferson University's Board of Trustees, serving until June 2000. Trained as a pediatrician, Dr. Chandler is Medical Director and Senior Physician for the Philadelphia Health Department.

Dr. Chandler received many decorations during a long military career which he concluded as a Lieutenant General, U.S. Army, and Deputy Surgeon General, U.S. Army. He was one of only eight major generals in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and the highest ranking African-American physician in the Department of Defense.

Currently Dr. Chandler serves on the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Center and formerly was Medical Co-Chairman of the United Negro College Fund. He is a past president of the Army National Guard Alliance of Health Care Professionals.

For many years, Dr. Chandler held a faculty affiliation at Jefferson Medical College, served on the JMC Admissions Committee and oversaw minority admissions.


Stephane King, MD, Joins Gynecologic Oncology

Stephanie King, MD, has joined the practice of John A. Carlson Jr., MD, and Charles J. Dunton, MD, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, at Jefferson. Dr. King comes to Jefferson from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where she was an attending physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology. While at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. King also held several faculty positions and completed a clinical fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology. In addition, Dr. King is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Her office is located at Suite 6200 of the Gibbon Building. Dr. Hasumi Supports Cancer Research at Jefferson

Ken-Ichiro Hasumi, MD, in association with The Noguchi Medical Research Institute, has endowed a research fund and The Dr. Ken-Ichiro Hasumi Associate Professorship for cancer research at Jefferson Medical College. Takami Sato, MD, Research Assistant Professor in the Division of Neoplastic Diseases, has been named as the first Dr. Ken-Ichiro Hasumi Associate Professor of Medicine at Jefferson, with the endowment then attaining full professorship status by the year 2003.

At an official ceremony on July 11, 1997, between representatives of the Noguchi Institute and Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Hasumi expressed his hope that this endowment would help intensify collaboration between Jefferson and the Noguchi Institute and result in new treatments for cancer patients in the United States, Japan, and around the world.

"We are truly delighted about furthering our relationship with such an excellent institution as the Noguchi Institute, and we will forever be grateful to Dr. Hasumi for making this possible by virtue of his extraordinary generosity," said Dr. Joseph S. Gonnella, MD, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Jefferson Medical College.

Also, in an unexpected announcement, Mr. Yoshihisa Asano, Executive Managing Director of the Noguchi Institute, made an additional 10-year pledge for the Amano-Gonnella Endowment, an endowment at Jefferson in honor of the longstanding collaboration between Dr. Gonnella and Dr. Kageyas Wat Amano, whose estate Mr. Asano directs as the trustee.

The Noguchi Medical Research Institute was established to promote international exchange of medical research.
