TJUH Sponsors Half Marathon Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is now the title sponsor of the premier half-marathon race in the nation - the Philadelphia Distance Run. The event is now known as the Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run. Jefferson Hospital President and CEO Thomas J. Lewis says, "It is because of our commitment to the greater Philadelphia community that we sought to sponsor the Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run and the accompanying Health and Fitness Expo." Three Races, Plus Health Expo This year's Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run will be held Sunday, September 27, starting at 8:30 a.m. The half-marathon run of 13.1 miles attracts thousands of runners each year from around the nation and the world. The race features a new course, starting at 12th and Market streets, going past Jefferson and coursing out of Center City along Kelly Drive and Boathouse Row and eventually looping back to finish at 17th Street and the Parkway. Up to 8,000 runners from as many as 15 countries and more than 40 states are expected to participate. Prior to Sunday's half-marathon, a Health and Fitness Expo will be presented Saturday, September 26, at the Philadelphia Marriott Hotel at 1201 Market Street. The expo will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and feature special workshops by Jefferson's orthopaedic and sports medicine specialists and exhibits by Jefferson departments and leading merchants and manufacturers. In addition, the Philadelphia Distance Run Festival of Races will hold the sixth annual Aetna US Healthcare Children's Run on Saturday, September 26, beginning at 10 a.m. from 17th Street and the Parkway. Growing in popularity every year, the race is expected to attract at least 1,000 children between ages 3 and 12. Every child who participates receives a medal. A new event, the second annual 5K Classic Run, will be held on Sunday, September 27, at 11 a.m. Funds from the Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run will be distributed to the Police Athletic League, Fairmount Park and the Children's Immunization Program of the City of Philadelphia. |
