Five-week old Paul Burge Jr. of South Philadelphia, the first child enrolled in First Steps for Healthy Kids, a program sponsored by area hospitals and coordinated by the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council (DVHC), receives his first well-child exam from Jefferson pediatrician Gary Emmett, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Jefferson Medical College. "A child's doctor must take care of the whole child. Immunization visits and the check-ups that accompany them let the physician see the child's whole life and help not only the child's body, but his or her world of school and play," says Dr. Emmett. His exam found young Paul "perfectly fit" as his parents, Paul Burge Sr., 18, and Tirsa Burge, 19, look on. "First Steps lets families without insurance enjoy the same relationship with a caregiver that families with insurance enjoy - giving all of our children a better life," Dr. Emmett adds. Almost 48,000 children in Southeastern Pennsylvania have no health insurance. First Steps will help eligible children enroll in Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or offer free well-child care to uninsured infants. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is one of the local hospitals participating in the program.
