Study Finds Jefferson One of Nation's Top 100 Hospitals

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is one of the nation's top 100 hospitals, as determined by two healthcare management and consulting firms.

Jefferson is the only hospital in the Greater Philadelphia area to appear on the list. We are ranked in the category for major teaching hospitals with 400 or more beds.

A report on the study appears in the January 5 issue of Modern Healthcare magazine. The two firms performing the study are HCIA, a Baltimore-based healthcare information company, and William M. Mercer, a New York-based human resources management consulting firm specializing in health care.

Their analysis reviewed nine measures of clinical, operational and financial performance to rate hospitals grouped into five categories of similar characteristics.

Financial management

• Expense per adjusted discharge
• Cash-flow margin
• Change in equity
• Return on capital assets

Operations

• Average length of stay
• Index of outpatient activity
• Index of total facility occupancy

Clinical practices

• Mortality, risk adjusted
• Complications, risk adjusted
