Jefferson's 174th Annual Commencement will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 28, at Philadelphia's historic Academy of Music. University President Paul C. Brucker, MD, will deliver the Convocation and confer all degrees.
Joseph S. Gonnella, MD, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, Jefferson Medical College, will present Doctor of Medicine degrees to 225 Jefferson Medical College (JMC) students.
James S. Studdiford III, Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, JMC, will administer the Oath of Hippocrates.
Jussi J. Saukkonen, MD, Vice President for Science Policy, Technology Development, and International Affairs and Dean, College of Graduate Studies, will present 19 Doctor of Philosophy degrees and 119 Master of Science degrees to students of the College of Graduate Studies (CGS).
The University will award honorary degrees to Datuk Dr Kamal Salih, who will receive the Doctor of Science degree, and Shigeaki Hinohara, MD, who will receive the Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
Dr. Salih is currently a member of Parliament for the Constituency of Wangsa Maju in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
Dr. Salih established Sesama Consulting Group (SCG) which undertook the establishment of Malaysia's first private medical college, the International Medical College (IMC). IMC is a partnership program of 20 medical schools in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, North America and New Zealand, whereby Malaysian students are admitted to medical studies in Malaysia for their preclinical studies (2 l/2 years) and then transferred to a partner school which awards the degree after a student's successful completion of the clinical studies. Jefferson Medical College is a partner medical school of IMC and the only one in the United States. Graduating on May 28 are five members of the charter class of IMC.
Dr. Hinohara is Chairman of the Board of St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, where he has been associated since 1941 and where he has served on the board since 1980. An accomplished internist and educator, Dr. Hinohara has devoted more than 60 years to medicine and medical science.
His many awards include The Order of the Secret Treasure, Gold and Silver Star bestowed by Emperor Akihito in 1993, and the Japanese Medical Association's Supreme Award for Scientific Achievement in 1982.
Jack Farber, Chairman, Jefferson's Board of Trustees, will deliver the Opening Proclamation and Reverend Deborah A. McKinley, Old Pine Street, Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, the Invocation and Benediction. R. Anthony Carabasi III, MD, Professor of Surgery and Professor of Radiology, will be Grand Marshal.
