On June 5, Jefferson Medical College presented its
highest alumni honor, the Alumni Achievement Award, to Joseph C. Flanagan, MD, Professor
of Ophthalmology, Jefferson Medical College; Attending Physician and Director,
Oculoplastic Department, Wills Eye Hospital; and Associate Chief, Division of
Ophthalmology, Lankenau Hospital.
Dr. Flanagan is a noted practitioner, educator and pioneer in both Ophthalmic Plastic
Surgery and the use of lasers in Ophthalmology. He has given over 600 scientific
presentations in this country and abroad and written over 80 scientific articles and 20
book chapters Dr. Flanagan has also been co-author of five books. Some of the honors Dr.
Flanagan has received for his achievements include the Distinguished Service Award,
American Academy of Ophthalmology - 1978; an Award of Appreciation, U.S. State Department,
for service to Beirut bombing victims - 1984; the Wills Eye Hospital Silver Tray Award in
recognition of Outstanding Service - 1988; and a Certificate for Distinguished
Achievement, Wills Eye Hospital - 1995.
Dr. Flanagan served as President of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery in 1984, and President of the Ophthalmic Club of Philadelphia in
1979. After graduating from Jefferson Medical College in 1963 as a member of the Alpha
Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Dr. Flanagan completed his residency in Ophthalmology
at Wills Eye Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery at the
Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, New York City.
