Summers
End Brings Blood Shortage
Blood Donor Center Needs Your Blood
During the summer vacation season just
ending, blood donations unfortunately always decrease. This causes the blood supply to
become dangerously low, especially as the Labor Day weekend approaches.
Donating blood at Jefferson saves lives and money. When you donate blood,
you save the hospital at least $196, the cost to purchase it from the Red Cross. And, if
you donate blood platelets, the cost savings to the hospital is about $500. One pint of
blood can be separated into three components to aid in a blood transfusion for a surgery
patient, treat shock and burn victims with plasma, and prevent bleeding episodes in
leukemia patients with platelets.
The Blood Donor Center is located at 8230 Gibbon. For more information or to make an
appointment to donate blood, call the Center at 5-7791.
