Join Jefferson’s United Way Day of Caring on October 1

This year, Jefferson’s United Way Day of Caring community service project has been expanded by the United Way Cabinet to accommodate more Jefferson volunteers. The enthusiasm of cabinet members and others who participated in last year’s Day of Caring at Project H.O.M.E. attracted a number of Jeffersonians who expressed an interest in participating in this worthwhile activity, said Kevin Donahue, Jefferson’s 1998 United Way Chairperson.

As a result, the Cabinet has included more projects and service activities for this year’s Day of Caring on Thursday, October 1. Volunteers may choose from service projects at:

  • Associated Services for the Blind - escort and give a descriptive view of the Franklin Institute to visually impaired adults in the morning

  • Catholic Social Services Mercy Hospice Shelter for Homeless Women & Children - help prepare and serve lunch for women and children residents in the morning

  • Fairmount Park Commission, Friends of Wissahickon, Wissahickon Valley in Fairmount Park a full day project. Choose either morning or afternoon to volunteer for outdoor activity including tree planting, fence repair, graffiti removal and clean-ups. Choose October 1 or October 3.

  • United Communities of Southeast Philadelphia, Southwark House - a full day project. Brighten up a basement where children create art, read and develop other special projects by painting room and sanding/painting bookshelves. Choose either morning or afternoon to volunteer.

  • Women Against Abuse, Inc. - spruce up a shelter for abused women - a full day project. Choose either morning or afternoon to volunteer.

Once you’ve arranged for approved personal or vacation time with your supervisor, you can join Day of Caring by calling Theresa McAnally in the office of the Vice President for Administration at 3-8062. Space is limited, and the deadline for volunteering is Friday, September 20. This year, Jefferson will share in your volunteer experience. For example, if the time needed for your project is four hours, two hours will be charged to your vacation/personal time, and Jefferson will give you the remaining two hours with pay.

Jefferson’s United Way Campaign will be held this year from October 14 to November 4. More information will appear in the October issue of JeffNews.
