HealthCare College Debuts in January In response to the many
changing pressures on todays primary care physicians throughout Jefferson Health
System (JHS) and our region, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, a member of JHS, and
Jefferson Medical College have developed the Jefferson HealthCare College.
Based on a strong tradition of teaching and research, Jefferson HealthCare
College will support todays practicing physician to work within the various care
models to provide the best possible patient care, says Geno J. Merli, MD, Vice
Chairman for Primary Care and Clinical Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine,
Jefferson Medical College (JMC) and Co-Director, Jefferson HealthCare College.
The Jefferson HealthCare College will present an integrated curriculum of
educational sessions for the primary care physician to choose from, covering the range of
diseases presenting at the physicians examining room, adds Richard C. Wender,
MD, Vice Chairman and Clinical Professor of Family Medicine, Department of Family
Medicine, JMC, and Co-Director, Jefferson HealthCare College.
Drs. Merli and Wender, along with Timothy Brigham, PhD, Assistant Dean, Graduate and
Continuing Medical Education, JMC, are responsible for all aspects of planning,
implementation and evaluation of the College whose mission is to:
- target the practicing physician by using a cohesive curriculum of timely educational
topics that will help improve clinical practice
- incorporate principles of managed care into the daily practice of the practicing
physician
- foster a multidisciplinary patient care approach which incorporates both primary care
practitioners and specialists
- improve the health of persons served by students of the Jefferson HealthCare College.
To further this mission, the program will foster collaborative learning and clinical
process improvement in evidence-based patient care, disease management and clinical
practice management. Monthly courses will be co-directed by primary care physicians and
specialists.The Colleges first-year courses Issues in Primary Care
Curriculum (January 14-15, February 12, March 19, April 9, May 13-15 and June
21-26) are directed specifically to primary care and family medicine practitioners and
internists. The College welcomes interested physicians from the Greater Delaware Valley
and beyond. Nurses and other allied health professionals are also welcome to enroll, with
continuing education credits anticipated for multiple disciplines.
