Jefferson HealthCare College Debuts in January

In response to the many changing pressures on today’s primary care physicians throughout Jefferson Health System (JHS) and our region, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, a member of JHS, and Jefferson Medical College have developed the Jefferson HealthCare College.

“Based on a strong tradition of teaching and research, Jefferson HealthCare College will support today’s practicing physician to work within the various care models to provide the best possible patient care,” says Geno J. Merli, MD, Vice Chairman for Primary Care and Clinical Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Jefferson Medical College (JMC) and Co-Director, Jefferson HealthCare College.

“The Jefferson HealthCare College will present an integrated curriculum of educational sessions for the primary care physician to choose from, covering the range of diseases presenting at the physician’s examining room,” adds Richard C. Wender, MD, Vice Chairman and Clinical Professor of Family Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, JMC, and Co-Director, Jefferson HealthCare College.

Drs. Merli and Wender, along with Timothy Brigham, PhD, Assistant Dean, Graduate and Continuing Medical Education, JMC, are responsible for all aspects of planning, implementation and evaluation of the College whose mission is to:

  • target the practicing physician by using a cohesive curriculum of timely educational topics that will help improve clinical practice
  • incorporate principles of managed care into the daily practice of the practicing physician
  • foster a multidisciplinary patient care approach which incorporates both primary care practitioners and specialists
  • improve the health of persons served by students of the Jefferson HealthCare College.

To further this mission, the program will foster collaborative learning and clinical process improvement in evidence-based patient care, disease management and clinical practice management. Monthly courses will be co-directed by primary care physicians and specialists. The College’s first-year courses – “Issues in Primary Care Curriculum”  (January 14-15, February 12, March 19, April 9, May 13-15 and June 21-26) are directed specifically to primary care and family medicine practitioners and internists. The College welcomes interested physicians from the Greater Delaware Valley and beyond. Nurses and other allied health professionals are also welcome to enroll, with continuing education credits anticipated for multiple disciplines.
