The Martha Jefferson Department of the Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital (TJUH) Womens Board recently held a memorial tribute for Betty Hodges. Mrs.
Hodges was a loyal and longstanding member of the department and an outstanding volunteer
active in many aspects of the Womens Board. During the tribute, a painting purchased
by Womens Board members at the Rittenhouse Art Show was presented to Michael
Vergare, MD, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, TJUH, and the
Daniel Lieberman Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Jefferson Medical College,
Thomas Jefferson University, for display in the department. Shown above, from left, with

Williams uses humor to help patients like Jill Toomey, of Malvern, Pa., get on the road to
recovery. Williams has been volunteering at Jeffersons Surgical Center for the last
11 years and recently received a special award for his extraordinary service from Thomas

Introducing Philadelphia Mayor Edward Rendell to the 10th Biennial meeting of
the American Motility Society (AMS) is Dr. Satish Rattan, Professor of Medicine and
Physiology, Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Rattan hosted the five-day session of the AMS,
the distinguished society representing the interests of clinicians and basic scientists in
gastrointestinal motility disorders. As guest of honor at the opening reception, Mayor
Rendell warmly welcomed the attendees. Several faculty members from Jefferson and other
Philadelphia area institutions were active participants in the five-day international

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital hosted Shadowing Day for a group of South
Philadelphia High School Students. Employees volunteered to work with students one-on-one
for this day-long event to educate students on the many career opportunities available at
