Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run Set For Sunday, September 19
For the second year in a row, Jefferson will sponsor the premier half-marathon race in the nation. The Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run will be held this year on Sunday, September 19, at 8:30 a.m.
For two days before the world-class race, a Health and Fitness Expo will be presented Friday, September 17, from noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday, September 18, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Philadelphia Marriott Hotel at 1201 Market Street. The expo will feature special workshops by Jeffersons orthopaedic and sports medicine specialists, participation by other Jefferson departments, and exhibits by leading merchants and manufacturers.
This will be the 22nd annual Distance Run. Each year the half-marathon run of 13.1 miles draws up to 8,000 runners from as many as 15 countries and more than 40 states.
Thomas J. Lewis, President and Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, says he looks forward to an even better turnout this year, both for the race and the health expo.
I expect this years event to draw an even larger number of competitors, as well as running and sports enthusiasts, Mr. Lewis said. Our expo should have all the sports medicine specialists from Jefferson and services that runners and those interested in the sport could ever need.
Race Director Mark Stewart says the Distance Run continues to be a gold standard for runners the world over. We are grateful to Jefferson Hospital for helping us maintain that standard, he says.
The Distance Runs Health Expo will also feature a special guest this year, marathon runner Lynn Jennings, a three-time world cross country champion and Bronze medal winner of the 10,000-meter event in the 1992 Olympics.
Competition and awards will again be held for corporate and running clubs. Jeffersonians may enter the race as individual runners or as part of a team.
This year all runners in the Distance Run will be fitted with a high tech computer chip attached to their shoelaces to record their race time. The state-of-the-art ChampionChip® scoring system has been used at the Boston Marathon, the 1996 Olympic Marathon, the Disney Marathon and other high-profile races around the world.
Each ChampionChip® contains a runners personalized identification code which will be read by sensors at the start and finish lines, and possibly other locations on the course. Funds from the Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run will again be distributed to the Police Athletic League and Fairmount Park.

Volunteering at Distance Run Can Be a 'Fun Family Event'
Jeffersonians who volunteered at last years Distance Run and brought their families with them had lots of fun, says Patricia Wallace, Manager, Patient and Volunteer Services, Jefferson Hospital.
It proved to be a real family event, so we encourage employees to plan on bringing family members, including children. Its a great Sunday activity for all ages.
Volunteers will be needed Sunday morning to help distribute water, assist at the finish line and generally lend a hand in organizing and directing participants and visitors.
