Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Advanced Medicine, Superior Care Recognized by U.S.News & World Report’s ‘America’s Best Hospitals’ for 1999

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital was ranked among “America’s Best Hospitals “ by U.S.News & World Report in 12 categories, tripling last year’s number. In addition, the hospital ranked best in the Delaware Valley for cardiology and heart surgery (where Jefferson was the only area hospital to be ranked), orthopedics and rehabilitation.

“Congratulations and thanks to everyone who contributed to Jefferson’s achievement of this outstanding recognition as a national leader in providing quality health care for our patients,” said Thomas J. Lewis, President and Chief Executive Officer for the Hospital.

Simplfying the names of several categories ranked, U.S.News & World Report recognized Jefferson’s excellence in:

  • Cancer       
  • Cardiology and Heart Surgery
  • Digestive Tract (gastroenterology)
  • Ear, Nose, and Throat (otolaryngology-head and neck surgery)
  • Geriatrics
  • Gynecology
  • Neurology and neurosurgery
  • Orthopedics
  • Rehabilitation
  • Respiratory Disorders (pulmonary)
  • Rheumatology
  • Urology

Also Wills Eye Hospital, which serves as Jefferson Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology, was ranked as third in the nation and first in Philadelphia for ophthalmology.

In addition, member hospitals of the Jefferson Health System were ranked best for rehabilitation in the Delaware Valley, with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Albert Einstein Medical Center (Moss Rehabilitation) and Magee Rehabilitation the only area hospitals achieving recognition.
