1999 Distance Run Features Jefferson Cheering Section for Fans, Volunteers

Volunteers, together with friends and family members of Jefferson runners in this year’s Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run, will be able to gather at a single location to socialize and to cheer the runners on. A “Jefferson Family Tent” is planned at a convenient location near the finish line. Light refreshments will be provided.

For the second year in a row, Jefferson is sponsoring the Distance Run, the premier half-marathon race in the nation. This year’s race is Sunday, September 19, at 8:30 a.m.

“We are inviting all Jefferson employees, staff and students to become involved in this noteworthy event by participating as volunteers,” says Thomas J. Lewis, President and Chief Executive Officer for the hospital.

“In 1998, about 100 Jeffersonians volunteered and had a great time. Many brought their families and children, and you are encouraged to do the same. This is an exciting event for all ages. Even if you can give only an hour or two, it will help a lot,” says Mr. Lewis.

Up to 8,000 runners from as many as 15 countries and more than 40 states are expected to participate.

Volunteers are needed between about 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., first to staff a water station and then to help at the finish line.

Every volunteer will receive a special “Distance Run Volunteer” tee shirt. Sign up or obtain more information from Pat Wallace, Manager, Volunteer Services at 5-6222.

JeffSTAT will staff and equip a medical tent to handle first aid and emergency needs.

Runners can still register to enter the race at www.philadistancerun.org
