Jefferson Affiliation Retreat Attracts 60 Physicians, Administrators
Nearly 60 physicians and administrators from Jefferson Medical College and our educational affiliate institutions gathered on campus for the first annual Jefferson Affiliation Retreat.
The purpose of the event was to discuss ways to enhance the quality of medical education at both Jefferson Medical College (JMC) and JMCs affiliated teaching institutions, says Thomas J. Nasca, MD, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Affiliations, JMC.
As a result of the session, an action plan conveying a vision of Jeffersons future is being generated to implement in the coming months, says Dr. Nasca.
Integral to future planning is Jeffersons continued growth as one of the top biomedical research institutions in the United States, as measured by a steady rise in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Jefferson now ranks in the top third of all medical colleges receiving NIH research funding, Dr. Nasca told retreat participants. In fact, during the last 10-year period measured by the NIH, 1986 to 1995, Jeffersons rate of growth in NIH research funding was second in the country, behind only that of the University of Pittsburgh.
Speaking or presenting to the retreat gathering, in addition to Dr. Nasca, were: Joseph S. Gonnella, MD, Dean, JMC, and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Thomas Jefferson University; Susan L. Rattner, MD, MS, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, JMC; and Timothy P. Brigham, PhD, Assistant Dean for Graduate and Continuing Medical Education, JMC.
In addition to faculty and administrators from Jefferson, affiliated institutions represented were: Albert Einstein Medical Center, Bryn Mawr Hospital, Christiana Care Health Services, duPont Hospital for Children, Episcopal Hospital, Frankford Hospital-Torresdale Division, Geisinger Medical Center, Lankenau Hospital, Lehigh Valley Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, Methodist Division of TJUH Inc., St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh and Wilmington Veterans Administration Hospital.
