Make September 23 Your Jefferson United Way Day of Caring

This year, Jefferson’s United Way Day of Caring presents Jeffersonians with six options for participation in our campaign’s volunteer project. “Here’s your chance to contribute your talent, enthusiasm and muscle to make life better for community members served by United Way agencies,” said Kevin J. Donahue, Director, Accounting and Systems for Physical Resources and Jefferson’s 1999 United Way Chairperson. “And it’s an opportunity to experience first hand the important work United Way agencies perform in the community.”

Among the service projects and activities open to Jefferson volunteers on Thursday, September 23, are:

  • African American Museum in Philadelphia – Help prepare teacher education packets, file, data entry, organize work area. Choose either morning or afternoon.

  • Awbury Arboretum – Spend an afternoon outdoors getting down and dirty! Help plant many native varieties of shrubs and perennials. Plants will be in pots (one-gallon size) already balled and burlaped.

  • Catholic Social Services, Mercy Hospice – Help spruce up this shelter for homeless women and children by painting, reorganizing food pantry and cleaning. Help in the kitchen and serve lunch. Choose either morning or afternoon.

  • Mid County Senior Services – a Non-Acute Services member of the Jefferson Health System. Spend a morning teaming up to help frail, low-income older adults in Delaware County by providing house and yard work and minor home repairs.

  • Women Against Abuse Inc. – Brighten a shelter for abused women and children by helping to paint two front porches in the kitchen area, windows on the first floor and other miscellaneous work. Choose either morning or afternoon.

  • The Salvation Army – Spend the morning helping with some office and clerical assistance at the Eliza Shirley House homeless shelter. Also help prepare and serve meals and clean up afterwards.

Once you’ve arranged for approved personal or vacation time with your supervisor, you can join Day of Caring by calling Theresa McAnally, Jefferson’s United Way Campaign and Day of Caring Coordinator, at 3-8062. Space is limited, and the deadline for volunteering is Thursday, September 16. Once again, Jefferson will share in your volunteer experience. For example, if the time needed for your project is four hours, two hours will be charged to your vacation/personal time, and Jefferson will give you the remaining two hours with pay.
